A STAGGERING 3,145 patients died needlessly in a year at 26 NHS hospital trusts, it was revealed yesterday. All the trusts but one had been rated by an official Government watchdog the CQC (Care Quality Commission), as "fair", "good" or even "excellent". Inspectors swooped unannounced on the wards of Basildon University Hospital after seeing its shock figure for 2007/2008.
